A California Distinguished School is an award given by the California State Board of Education to public schools within the state that best represent exemplary and quality educational programs. Approximately five percent of California schools are awarded this honor each year following a rigorous selection process. Eligibility is based on federal and state criteria including the No Child Left Behind program, Academic Performance Index (API), and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

The International Baccalaureate program is world renown for its comprehensive approach to education. Pleasant Valley is only one of 80 high schools in California and the only school north of Sacramento to offer the IB program.

2006:     Highest state Academic Performance Index score of any high school in Butte County

2006:      Met and exceeded federal accountability criteria (Adequate Yearly Progress) in all areas

2006:      State Grant for planning enrichments to Art Program

2006:      Western Association of Schools and Colleges Visiting Committee extends its highest commendation to Pleasant Valley High School

2005-10: Awarded Federal Smaller Learning Communities Grant jointly with Chico High

2003:      Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) for a six-year term
