English
The English department is made up of sixteen teachers many of whom participate in on-going professional development from such liaisons as the Literacy Project and the Expository Reading and Writing Projects. Essentially our department teaches reading, writing and speaking in all our classes. We have identified essential standards by grade level and are focused into helping every student achieve proficiency at every grade level for each essential standard.
The English department offers several pathways to meet the needs of all students. We offer remediation classes as well as Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes. Any student who wishes to enroll in our Honors or AP/IB coursework is encouraged to do so. We offer a 20 to 1 Read 180 Program for ninth graders and an English Review class for seniors who need to make up credits.
For the last several years we have worked to incorporate expository reading and writing into all classes. We have tightened up our curriculum in ninth and tenth grades so that all students experience the same literature while studying the analysis of literature.
Needs
Replacement texts are needed for lost or damaged books and for new students. Our books were purchased at a time when a set of books was considered thirty-five texts. Now we commonly have forty students per section, so we are short several texts in many classes.
