Physical Education

Physical Education Department PhotoFitness is our number one priority in the Physical Education Department. We teach students to take responsibility for their own activity, fitness, and health and to prepare them to be physically active and healthy throughout their adult lives. Our standards-based physical education program is based on concepts and principles of movement, which includes fun competition, and personal and social skills including respect, integrity, and teamwork. Students learn skill concepts that can be applied in all physical education and instructional settings.

Our staff of four men and three women create custom curriculum including sports conditioning, personal fitness, and dance that follow the principles of Fitness for Life. We:

  • help students learn about Health-related physical fitness and the benefits of healthy lifestyles, including participation in regular physical activity and sound nutrition
  • involve Everyone, not just students who have special physical talents
  • feature activities that can be used for a Lifetime, including those that get students active now, both in and out of school
  • help students find activities and plan activity programs that are Personal and appropriate to their individual needs.

Our Needs

Due to our limited budget, we have been unable to take field trips. However, our goals include:

  • taking our students to a local golf course during our golf unit and to the local tennis club during our tennis unit. We look forward to being able to provide enrichment opportunities that would include taking students to Chico State athletic events including basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball
  • We would like to develop a fitness lab that includes fitness equipment such as treadmills, stairmasters and bikes
  • We would also like the lab to include computer stations for fitness testing (such as body fat and flexibility) and recording
  • We would like to begin video analysis of movement which would require a camera and a pull down screen to show such movement on
  • We currently do not have enough equipment for students. Our goal is to have one ball/stick/glove for each student. We need help purchasing electronic devices such as a notebook computer for each grade level and new printers. We would also like two-three class sets of pedometers and heart rate monitors

The Physical Education Department would like to thank the Community of Chico for their instrumental role in improving our football stadium.

  • Physical Education classes are required in grades 9 and 10 and elective in grades 11 and 12.
  • Each spring, students in grade 9 take a Fitnessgram test, with results reported to the California Department of Education.
  • All PE classes meet the California Challenge Standards for Physical Education in grades 9 and grade 10.
